Dr. Sherman Yu, who is considered by the Consumers Research Council of America to be one of the top surgeons in the US, teamed up with Dr. Terry Scarborough in 2008 to create the Texas Laparoscopic Consultants. A Houston native, Dr. Yu graduated with High Honors in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his medical degree with honors in his surgical rotations from Baylor College of Medicine. While performing his surgical training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Dr. Yu took an interest in minimally invasive techniques primarily focused on bariatric procedures.
Dr. Terry Scarborough, who is considered by the Consumers Research Council of America to be one of the top surgeons in the US, has performed more than 4000 laparoscopic procedures, including over 1000 laparoscopic bariatric procedures.
Equipped with a degree in Pharmacy from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, Dr. Scarborough received his medical degree, with honors, from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1993. Dr. Scarborough performed his surgery residency at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He then completed a year-long fellowship in laparoscopic surgery, also at Baylor.
In 2008, Dr. Scarborough team up with Dr. Yu and created the Texas Laparoscopic Consultants. Together, they have earned the reputation of a leading bariatric practice in the Houston area.
The Gastric Sleeve procedure is highly effective in treating obesity. Gastric Sleeve, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, vertical gastric sleeve or gastric sleeve resection surgery, is an excellent option for those who struggle with excess weight and haven’t had success with traditional methods of diet and exercise.

Gastric Bypass is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery, and is well studied and widely regarded as a safe and effective way to lose excess weight and treat obesity related disorders. Gastric Bypass surgery can be performed as an open surgery or as a laparoscopic surgery. The surgeons at Texas Laparoscopic Consultants opt to perform gastric bypass laparoscopically in 98% of cases. Laparoscopic technique leads to shorter recovery time and less scarring, although a patient’s medical status will occasionally require a traditional open surgery.
Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD) is a bariatric surgery that is both restrictive and malabsorptive, which means that it reduces a patient’s capacity for food and also changes the way that calories and nutrients are absorbed by the body. This surgery has been shown to be effective for patients with severe morbid obesity.
Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery is a safe and effective weight loss procedure that is less invasive than other bariatric surgeries. The team at Texas Laparoscopic Consultants is experienced in several types of Gastric Banding techniques, including the Lap Band®. Gastric Banding is a low risk procedure that is appropriate for a variety of patients; while surgery is typically reserved for patients with a BMI greater than 35, those suffering from excess weight at a BMI of 30-35 may also be candidates. As with all weight loss therapies, success requires dedication to lifelong eating and exercise changes and a commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
Laparoscopic Greater Curve Plication (LGCP), also known as Gastric Plication, is a modern restrictive surgery that does not require removal of any portion of the stomach or implanted devices.
Gastric Plication surgery reduces the size of the stomach by creating folds in the large part of the stomach. The surgeon sutures the fold, but does not remove any part of the stomach. The segment of your stomach that is used by your body is reduced, leading to decreased stomach volume, which restricts the amount of food the body needs to feel full. As with all bariatric surgeries, patients must commit to healthy eating and activity habits.
Low complication rates as compared to more complex surgeries. Typical results of loss of more than 50% of excess body weight
75% of patients see significant improvement in obesity related diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and hypertension
The gastric balloon was developed as a nonsurgical alternative to more traditional, surgical weight loss procedures, and is designed for patients who want to kick-start their weight loss. The gastric balloon is a soft silicone balloon that is inserted into the stomach while it is deflated. The device is temporarily inserted into the stomach and inflated with a sterile saline solution to help patients control their appetite and lose weight in a healthy, manageable way.
The gallbladder is a small abdominal organ that functions to store bile made by the liver. The gallbladder aids in digestion by sending bile to the small intestine to dissolve proteins, oils and fats that we eat. Although it works to aid digestion, problems with the gallbladder do not usually lead to diminished digestion.
Texas Laparoscopic Consultants offers advanced procedures to treat painful hernias. Surgery is often necessary to alleviate hernias, and we are able to offer a laparoscopic option that safely treats hernias effectively with faster recovery and less visible scarring.
The colon, also known as the large intestine, is an important part of the digestive system. When the colon is diseased, surgery is often necessary to reduce the symptoms and stop the spread of disease. Traditional colon surgery is highly invasive, requiring large incisions and long recovery periods. The surgeons at Texas Laparoscopic Consultants are able to perform less invasive surgery using advanced laparoscopic technology.
Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (commonly referred to as Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication) involves reinforcing the “valve” between the esophagus and the stomach by wrapping the upper portion of the stomach around the lowest portion of the esophagus – much the way a bun wraps around a hot dog. In a laparoscopic procedure, surgeons use small incisions (1/4 to 1/2 inch) to enter the abdomen through cannulas (narrow tube-like instruments). The laparoscope, which is connected to a tiny video camera, is inserted through the small incision, giving the surgeon a magnified view of the patient’s internal organs on a television screen. The entire operation is performed “inside” after inflating gas into it expands the abdomen.
Laparoscopic Surgery of the Spleen, Adrenal Gland, Pancreas, and Kidney
If you have been diagnosed with adverse conditions of the spleen, adrenal glands, pancreas or kidneys, you may require surgery to relieve symptoms and correct damage. Dr. Yu and Dr. Sherman have been specially trained in laparoscopic technique. Using their expertise and experience, they can perform surgeries on the spleen, adrenal glands, pancreas or kidneys laparoscopically. The advantages of laparoscopic procedure over traditional surgery include less invasive surgery with fewer complications, less scarring and quicker recovery times.
EsophyX TIF (transoral incisionless fundoplication) is the latest treatment for safely and effectively treating chronic acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A completely incisionless procedure, EsophyX TIF reconstructs the antireflux barrier to provide a solution to the anatomical root cause of GERD. The procedure is for patients who are dissatisfied with current pharmaceutical therapies or are concerned about the long-term effects of daily use of reflux medications.
In laparoscopic surgery, surgeons make several small incisions, often less than an inch each, to allow placement of trocars to enter the abdomen and allow passage of instruments to operate. Now in SILS, we do the same surgery through just one small incision, often at the belly button. This eliminates the multiple small incisions spread out throughout the abdominal wall that were made in traditional laparoscopic surgery. Often the incision at the belly button can be hidden so that your abdomen almost looks scar-less!
