• Vaccinations

  Vaccinations help protect your pet from a number of potentially serious and even fatal diseases, such as Rabies. Not only that, vaccinations cost considerably less than the treatments available for the diseases pets are normally vaccinated against. Every pet should be vaccinated – even indoor dogs and cats can be exposed to a rabid bat. Vaccines contain viruses or bacteria that have been modified so that they will not cause disease. When an animal is vaccinated, it stimulates two parts of the animal’s immune system. One is the production of antibodies, the other is the stimulation of cell mediated immunity, which, in combination, mount a response against the bacteria or virus in question. If the dog or cat is later exposed to that disease, the two parts of the immune system will react quickly to destroy the disease-causing agent. If the mother has a healthy immune system, a puppy or kitten will most likely receive antibodies in the mother’s milk while nursing. Puppies and kittens should receive a series of vaccinations starting at 6 to 8 weeks of age. We administer four sets of vaccinations at three-week intervals. The final dose should be administered around 16 weeks of age.   Key to Your Pet’s Health In an effort to help all pets live longer, healthier and happier lives we recommend: Twice-a-year wellness exams to help detect, treat and prevent health problems before they become serious Disease prevention based on your pet’s lifestyle, the threats in your area and other risk factors Pet owner education, especially awareness of the pet aging process Preventative Healthcare The key to a healthy pet is the early detection and prevention of disease. The gradual onset of health problems in an apparently healthy pet often go unnoticed. Once symptoms appear the condition may be too difficult or costly to diagnose and treat. Age is not a disease; however, there are many conditions, that if diagnosed early, can be completely reversed or controlled for extended periods of time. Regular dental care, vaccinations, parasite control and a balanced diet are essential for the health of your pet. Laboratory testing plays an integral role in the early detection of changes in your pet’s health. Diagnostic tests provide essential information by which your veterinarian can identify blood disorders, kidney and liver disease, diabetes, infection, cancer, thyroid disease and other hormonal problems. Chemistry Tests – These panels survey many of the organ systems of the body to make sure they are working properly. Thyroid Function Tests – These tests are useful in diagnosing increased (hyper) or decreased (hypo) functions of the thyroid gland. Urinalysis – This test assesses the health and function of the urinary system. This is especially important in older animals to help with the early detection of kidney disease.

• Spay and Neuter Sugeries

  What do “spay” and “neuter” really mean? Female dogs and cats are spayed by removing their reproductive organs, and male dogs and cats are neutered by removing their testicles. In both cases the operation is performed while the pet is under anesthesia. Depending on your pet’s age, size, and health, he or she will stay at our veterinarian clinic for a few hours or a day. Depending upon the procedure, your pet may need stitches removed after a few days. One of our veterinarians would be happy to fully explain spay and neuter procedures to you and discuss with you the best age at which to sterilize your pet. Spaying or Neutering is Good for Your Pet: Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat. Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle. Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease. Spaying or Neutering Is Good for You: Spaying and neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions. Neutering cats makes them less likely to spray and mark territory. Spaying a dog or cat eliminates her heat cycle. Estrus lasts an average of six to 12 days, often twice a year, in dogs and an average of six to seven days, three or more times a year, in cats. Females in heat can cry incessantly, show nervous behavior, and attract unwanted male animals. Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than do those who have been spayed or neutered. Spaying and neutering can make pets less likely to bite. Average life span of un-neutered (intact) male cats (Tom Cats) in the city is 18 months – they tend to roam a radius of 20 miles and are therefore likely to be either hit by a car or die from Feline Leukemia/FIV. Neutering makes pets less likely to roam the neighborhood, run away, or get into fights. Spaying and Neutering Are Good for the Community: Communities spend millions of dollars to control unwanted animals. Irresponsible breeding contributes to the problem of dog bites and attacks. Animal shelters are overburdened with surplus animals. Stray pets and homeless animals get into trash containers, defecate in public areas or on private lawns, and frighten or anger people who have no understanding of their misery or needs. Some stray animals also scare away or kill birds and wildlife.

• Dental Care

  Dental Problems A cracked or broken tooth can be painful if the nerve tissue is exposed; if it becomes infected, there is the danger of the infection spreading through the bloodstream. Prompt veterinary attention is recommended. Here are some of the common warning signs of dental problems in dogs: Loss of appetite Red, swollen and bleeding gums Drooling Blood in the saliva Yellow-brown tartar at the gum line Broken teeth Foul breath However, the most common dental problems dogs experience is buildup from plaque and calculus. If left unchecked, plaque and calculus buildup can eventually cause inflammation of both the gums (gingivitis) and the membrane lining of the tooth socket (periodontitis). Without proper treatment, the teeth may become infected and fall out and the resulting infection may spread to other parts of the body such as the kidneys or valves of the heart. Veterinary Dental Treatments If your pet has existing periodontal disease, the only way to clean the teeth is under general anesthetic. The teeth are explored with a probe to map the packets (a 6 point exam on every tooth), then hand and /or ultrasonic scaling of the crown (exposed tooth) is done followed by a thorough cleaning below the gum line. The tartar you see on the tooth is not where the main disease process occurs! Polishing removes the microscopic scratches on the teeth that cleaning causes. If this step is avoided, the tartar can actually build up faster. A medicated solution is flushed below the gum line to remove debris and reduce bacteria. Fluoride is then applied to the teeth. Dental problems can be minimized or even prevented through regular annual cleaning and scaling under anesthesia, done right here at Bingle Veterinary Clinic. Thorough oral hygiene by our professional team takes anywhere from 35 minutes to over 2 hours depending on the severity of the mouth problem. Try to avoid giving your dogs bone and cow hooves to chew on. These often cause tooth fractures requiring root canals or extractions. Nylar bones are preferable. They are available at our veterinary clinic, or at most pet supply stores. Additionally, dry, crunchy foods can be helpful in keeping teeth clean. As the dog chews, particles from the dry food scrape against the teeth, acting like a toothbrush to help remove plaque.

• International Travel Documents

  Obtaining Your Pet’s International Health Certificate You can request an international health certificate from one of our veterinarians. We always recommend that you start this process at least 6 months before you plan to travel with your pet. Every country has different requirements; therefore, we want to be sure that everything is in order before you travel. This will give you enough time to get the vaccinations, vaccine titers (if required), possible quarantine, exam and paperwork in order. Our veterinarians are certified by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). International health certificates for pets are only accepted by foreign nations if they have been filled out by a certified APHIS veterinarian. Our veterinarians will perform the specific tests and administer the specific vaccinations required by the country you will be visiting. We will record the test results on the international health certificate and the certificate should be dated no more than 10 days prior to your departure. Then your completed international health certificate must be mailed to the USDA Veterinary Services office in Austin for endorsement. USDA endorsement is a requirement on all international health certificates. Once endorsed, it will be returned to you. We recommend using FedEx overnight service. At the airport, you will be required to submit your international health certificate to the to airline personnel and customs officers.

• Tightrope Orthopedic Surgery and Other Specific Orthopedic Surgeries

  Arthrex TightRope Procedure – Knee Surgery in Dogs Less traumatic, More effective, Less costly Just as in the human knee, the most critical stabilizing structure in the canine knee is the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL or ACL). The primary function of the CCL is to prevent forward thrusting motion and inward rotation of the tibia during weight bearing and to prevent hyper-extension of the knee. When the CCL is ruptured or partially torn, the abnormal, forward thrusting motion and inward rotation of the tibia during weight bearing results in an unstable, painful knee and ultimately, in debilitating, degenerative arthritic changes in the knee joint. Accurate diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention of this serious injury is the current standard of care. The newest procedure for repairing a ruptured CCL by ligament replacement is the TightRope Ligament technique. This procedure has been developed by James L. Cook, DVM, PhD, Diplomat of the College of Veterinary Surgeons. This procedure has been proven in over 200 knees and has been shown to be highly effective. While the doctors at Bingle Vet are experienced with the Tightrope Orthopedic Surgery and other specific orthopedic surgeries, they are not Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeons and handle surgeries on a case-by-case basis. • Allergy Testing and Treatment

  The most common sign of allergy in dogs and cats is itching, manifested by scratching, rubbing, licking and chewing. The scratching and itching that are due to allergies are always more intense than normal and may lead to varying degrees of hair loss and rashes. The rashes often represent infection. In rare cases, vomiting and/or diarrhea may be present especially if the dog or cat suffers from food allergy. In some cases, allergic dogs and cats will have no other symptom except asthma. Others will show hay fever-like symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes and runny nose. In a good number of cats, skin lesions without associated itching are the only clinical signs of allergy.

• Overnight Boarding

  Our climate control pet boarding facility at our Spring Branch / Memorial Villages is equipped with over 80 pet condos and kennels (and we’re expanding to increase our capacity)! While our Katy / Fulshear facility is not as big, your pets will still get the compassionate care they’ve come to expect from Bingle Vet. Our canine visitors are walked a minimum of 3 times daily. Our dedicated and caring team of professionals will get to know your pet so they will feel secure and safe with us. We also offer doggie daycare for those clients who wish to have their dog stay with us during the day while they are at work. Since we are a full-service veterinary clinic, we have experience with administering medications as well as taking care of other special needs of our guests. One of our veterinarians is notified immediately by our caring support team if they feel your pet may need medical attention. To prevent the spread of Kennel Cough, we require that all dogs are up-to-date on their Bordetella vaccine. Additionally, all dogs and cats boarding with us must be in compliance with the Texas rabies vaccine law. Our feline guests have their own area in our Cat Condos.

  Doggie Daycare is designed for those clients who wish to have their pet stay with us for the day, but not overnight. Typically, clients will use our daycare service when they prefer to not leave their pet unattended at home while they are away for the day. This service is great for those new puppies who are not litter trained or those senior citizens who need that extra attention during the day.

  Cat Boarding – Feline Condos We also offer condos exclusively for our feline friends. Cats enjoy a relaxing time in our quiet kitty condo area, complete with a window, scratch posts and a large fish tank. We like to let our feline guests out to enjoy playtime in the room – they will have the opportunity to run around, climb the posts, watch the fish and peek out the window. We love our feline guests!

Additionally, we provide a variety of medicated baths including Capstar with a bath for fleas/ticks, Mitaban dip for mange, Lymes dip for fungal infections, oatmeal baths for skin care as well as other medicated baths designed to help heal medically diagnosed skin infections.

  Therapy Laser

  Is laser therapy new? The beneficial effects of laser light on tissue were first recognized almost forty years ago. Since then, there have been thousands of studies documenting the positive effects laser light has on different types of cells, tissue, and disorders. Recent advances in technology and manufacturing have made it possible to have this exciting modality available and affordable for clinicians. How long does the treatment take? Treatment protocols are unique to each patient and condition. Therefore, treatments will vary in time, complexity and cost. For some chronic patients, multiple joints will be treated during one laser treatment session. When appropriate, laser therapy can be used as a complementary adjunct to other treatment plans. What can be treated with laser therapy? If your pet is feeling pain, has inflammation, or a wound, the laser is a sterile, pain-free, surgery-free, drug-free treatment. The laser is used to treat a variety of injuries, wounds, fractures, neurological conditions, numerous dermatological problems, and pain. Whether your pet is rehabilitating from trauma or injury, healing from wounds, or simply aging, the laser has been shown to provide relief and speed healing. What’s involved with treating my pet? The laser light is delivered through a non-invasive handpiece to treat the affected area. Your pet will feel a gentle and soothing warmth. As the laser is administered, many pets will relax, much like you would experiencing a good massage. The almost immediate relief of pain will allow your pet to be comfortable and any anxiety that your pet initially experienced will dissipate. How does it work? The Companion therapy laser system sends photons, or packets of light energy, deep into tissue without damaging it. These photons are absorbed within the mitochondria of the cells and induce a chemical change called “photo-bio-modulation”. This light energy then inspires production of ATP in the cell. ATP is the fuel, or energy, cells need for repair and rejuvenation. Impaired or injured cells do not make this fuel at an optimal rate.
