Dr. Dean W. Smith is board certified in orthopedic surgery. He has clinical interests in minimally invasive hand surgery, endoscopic and arthroscopic upper extremity surgery, hand trauma, hand reconstruction, arthritis, fracture management, tendon and nerve disorders. He is also certified in Surgery of the Hand, the highest certification for hand surgery from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Smith has earned a reputation for delivering excellent care in the overall management of conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, arm and shoulder for patients of all ages, and has been practicing in Houston’s Texas Medical Center since 2001. He has been recognized as one of Houston’s Top Doctors by H Magazine, Houstonia Magazine, and Vitals.com’s Patients’ Choice Award. Patients are referred to him for evaluation and treatment from all over the southwestern United States. Dr. Smith graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Missouri School of Medicine after receiving a B.A. in Education and Exercise Science from the University of Kentucky. He completed his residency and internship in orthopedic surgery at the University of New Mexico. He went on to obtain fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of Florida. As an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), Dr. Smith is committed to continuing education and the advancement of hand surgery through ongoing research and peer-reviewed publications. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Societies.
